Our Saints have been missing one week tonight, and I really hope that someone has taken them in and is caring for them and just hasn’t seen my ads/signs/and postings. If you live in the Foothills area, especially around Foothills and Scribner roads, please look in you barns or sheds and see if they may be holed up inside. Both dogs are 6 years old on Thanksgiving day which is middle aged for a Saint Bernard, so they get a little stiff and sore with too much exercise. If they’ve been running around for a week, they probably can hardly move. If you see them please call me anytime at 323-2197 or 991-5394.

Been gone just over two months now, anonymous caller claims he’s in North Idaho (call was untraceable) $1000 cash reward for the safe return of Duesenberg. He is a 130 lbs. neutered male St. Bernard/ Great Pyrenees mix, reddish-tan & white with black highlights around his eyes and muzzle. I raised this little guy fromm a premature pup, got him through epilepsy and effects of the medicinne. He has a great life hiking and snowshoeing in the winter and spending summers at the family lake cabin. Please call 509-443-3589 if you have seen him or know anything of his whereabouts.

Kiwi is a small-sized, adult female cat. I last saw her at 11:00 pm on 7/10/2008 at home. She probably left early in the morning on the 11th to sleep in the garage and to visit her hiding places in a nearby alley.

At the time Kiwi disappeared, she was in good health. She is fixed and has good teeth. Her weight and thickness of hair fluctuate seasonally but her hair length is basically medium with a dark sheath across the back. As a result of surgery, one side of the groin area has less loose skin than the other. She is sometimes clumsy in her attempts to jump up to a counter or a table and will sometimes wobble in the way she walks. Without grooming, she will look scruffy.

There is a prettiness to Kiwi that doesn’t show in photos. The heart shaped face with prominent cheekbones and expressive eyes reminds me of Liz Taylor. Sometimes she will pose in a still-like manner like a very pretty doll.

As much as I miss Kiwi and want her back, it will bring me peace of mind to know that she is in a safe place.

On 9/14/2008, Dave Richardson, Director of the Spokane Humane Society, generously shared his time with a few individuals who are not associated to any group or organization but are concerned for the plight of strays. Specific concerns are the need for increasing capacity, a viable open grounds indoor/ outdoor shelter, a better tracking system for unusual occurrences (particularly those that occur in clusters), and the need for increasing the size and scope of photo databases to include strays and surrenders prior to being placed for adoption:

Meeting Highlights
As explained by Richardson, a study will be concluded in December and used to determine the necessity for expanding capacity. In effort to increase the rate of reuniting lost/ stolen pets to their owners, expanding a photo base was also impressed upon him. The objective is to include all strays and surrenders, and not just those listed for adoption, so that pet owners can more expansively search for their missing pets.

Although Richardson does not represent Spokanimal or SCRAPS or is authorized to speak for these agencies, he indicated that there has been some improvement in record keeping of concentrated areas in which there has been an unusual rate of disappearance and unusual rates of influxes in other areas. I think more can be done including public outreach for investigative purposes and increasing public awareness of the laws that protect the health and well-being of animals and their owners.

It was of particular interest to learn that SHS is in application of a grant from Maddies Fund which provides financial incentive for reducing rates of euthanasia. More can be learned about Maddies Fund at the following website: http://www.maddiesfund.org/grant/fund_guide.html

General Info (as provided by SHS’s director)
The Spokane Humane Society receives surrenders. Strays are referred to Spokanimal and SCRAPS. Approximately 20,000 strays and surrenders go through SHS, Spokanimal, and SCRAPS annually and approximately half of these are adoptable.

The Spokane Humane Society receives transports of adoptable strays and surrenders exceeding capacity at Spokanimal and SCRAPS. Capacity is determined by number of available kennels and number of staff. Previously, 1/3 of transports to SHS were strays and 2/3 were surrenders. The current rate is 50/50. For the most part, adoptability is based on health, age, personality, and cuteness factor. SHS will also accept and place aggressive canine breeds with careful screening of selected adopters.

At SHS, fees for surrenders have been eliminated and an appointment is required. The practice of loaning traps has also been eliminated. Implementation of an indoor/ outdoor cat shelter is in the works.

Rule #1 Cats simply do not disappear. Because of their size and instinct to stay hidden cats can do a pretty good job of it though.

Rule #2 just because you don’t see your cat does not mean it is not there.

Many owners assume that if they have looked for their in door cat and could not see it the pet must have been taken or stolen, or must have ran to some distant location. While this occasionally happens it is rare.

When your cat first ran it looked for the first safe spot it could find. It may very well know where “home” is but to get from its current “safe spot” (wherever that may be) back to “home” means exposing itself. But this complete cover instinct tells it to stay put and hidden rather then venture away from its new safe spot, even if home is only a few yards away and even if the animal is starving.

Rule #3 just because you don’t see your cat does not mean your cat is not close by.

Many people assume that if their kitty has not been spotted or heard meowing it must not be close by. Not So. Many people have reported that when they finally found their missing cat, their kitty did not make a sound or move towards the owner.

What are the typical behaviors of cats in this category?

These cats are desperate to find a place that they perceive to be safe. They will run if spotted or approached, keep very low to the ground, legs short, dart from place to place, if they perceive additional threats. They will typically hide during the day and sneak out at night for bits of food, then quickly dart back to their hiding spot. Use this information when you do foot searches. When your cat might have been sighted ask what the cat was doing, if it was seen lounging on a porch that is most likely not your cat, it doesn’t fit the profile of a frightened or timid cat.

What places might a cat hide?

The ideal place is for a cat to hide in an area with no resident cats or dogs but with access to food and water. Indoor cats are often found within a 5-block radius of their home. They may move if chased by a dog of a cat, or if they feel threatened, but once they spend time and deposit scent in the area, they will most likely stay put. If your cat is a timid outdoor cat or injured there is a greater chance your cat will be found within its own territory which can range in size to several acres in the country to a micro territories for city cats. If you know the area your cat roams concentrate your search in that area then move out from there, think like your cat. Where would a frightened kitty hide? What areas would be attractive and what areas would be avoided? Think low not high.

What if I see my cat early on?

The cat will likely be closer rather then farther particularly early on.

Early on the cat may show its body but that is no guarantee it will come to the owner or allow the owner to approach it.

The longer the amount if time as passed the greater the chances that something might occur that will scare the cat further away.

The more experience a cat has with the outdoors previously the further the cat may venture.

The more timid the personality the closer it will stay.

Over and over people have recounted that they were able to see their kitty in the first or second day it was lost but then the kitty ran way in fear. Many times the owner will not spot the cat again for days or weeks, if they spot their cat at all.

What this means is, as more time passes, either they are less courageous, better at hiding, or are scared father away where it is more difficult for the owner to spot.

What if I see my cat a month or two later?

Sometimes after 4-8 weeks of hiding some cats begin to show them selves. My guess is that these cats that maintain a complete cover so successfully early on also have trouble maintaining their weight. Once the weight drops below a certain point, they begin to throw a little caution to the wind because they are so hungry.

CAUTION IF YOU SEE YOUR CAT Nothing can be more heartbreaking then to lose a animal see it maybe even touch it but then have it disappear gain. I cannot advise one way or the other because both behaviors occur frightened cats may run, frightened cats may also stay put. Please be forewarned and careful when approaching your cat. It may be the best chance you get to retrieve it, but it may also be the last time you see it for a long time. Some cats allow themselves to be picked up, but many cats bite and scratch in fear and run off when the owner is unable to keep a firm grip. If you decide to approach makes your self as small and silent as you can, Wear heavy gloves, Once you decide to pick up the cat, you can not change your mind m\midstream, you have to commit hang on to your cat and don’t let go.

There is no way to predict of your cat will allow you to pick it up or run away, and there is n way to tell if trapping would be successful or not.

Tried everything?

Your kitty may be in the complete cover personality profile. F you believe your cat may be in this category, do not expect your sweet kitty to come running at the familiar sound of the bag of food. Instead your missing pet is most likely hunkered down to the ground more frightened then ever; ready to dart away from any received threat, even you. The only way to successfully bring your animal I home is with a trap.

If you have tried all the methods in the general search techniques and tried just sitting outside to no avail, as a last resort it may be time to try to trap.

BEGIN LOOKING IMMEDIATELY! Assume he cannot find his way back to you or he would. The minute you think he’s lost, he is! Don’t waste precious time hoping he’s all right. Collars and tags come off.

1. CHECK THE NEIGHBORHOOD THOROUGHLY. Whistling, calling, walking, and driving are still the best first steps to find your pet. Be sure to walk or drive around at night, also; a pet who is frightened may hide during the day and become active at night. REMEMBER TO LISTEN WHEN YOU CALL. You may hear your pet whimpering if he is stuck somewhere.

2. TALK TO NEIGHBORS, leaving a description of your pet with as many as you can. The more “eyes” watching for your pet, the better. Neighborhood children can be especially helpful. Let your mail carrier & trash collector know about your missing pet; they cover a lot of territory.

3. CHECK AT SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS, CHURCHES, PARKS, SHOPPING CENTERS, and other places where people gather.

4. CHECK WITH ALL ANIMAL SHELTERS IN YOUR COUNTY.

5. MAKE FLYERS with a photo of your pet and home/work phone numbers and post where permitted. Leave them at veterinary clinics, groceries, laundromats, pet stores, grooming parlors, service stations in your neighborhood. Pass them out to neighbors and to newspaper carriers and other delivery people who service your area.

6. ADVERTISE in local newspapers. Also, watch the “Found pet” ads, and respond to any that may possibly be your pet. After a week of wandering, your white poodle may look like a “gray mixed breed.” Contact local radio or TV stations that broadcast lost pet reports.

ABOVE ALL, DON’T GIVE UP. You should continue searching a minimum of eight weeks! Your pet may wander or may be kept by someone for some time before being turned in. (Shelters say people have turned in pets they found six months earlier!) Keep your reports updated weekly. Keep your flyers posted. Your pet is out there … somewhere … depending on you to find him!
